Robert Redford

Robert RedfordRedford had his first acting job in 1959, in a Broadway production of Tall Story. In 1962, he made
his feature film debut in War Hunt, which received critical praise but made a poor showing at the box office. In 1963, the director Mike Nichols cast Redford as the lead in his Broadway production of Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park. The show was a smash hit, but eleven months into the run Redford tried of the daily grind of stage work and decided to focus on making movies. However, Redford's first five films failed to attract audiences, although his performance in Inside Daisy Clover in 1965 earned him a Golden Globe Award for the most promising male newcomer. Discouraged, Redford spent the next two years in Europe pondering his next professional move.

In 1967, Redford returned to Hollywood, where he reprised his role in a film version of Barefoot in the Park. The film was a box office hit, reviving Redford's career and earning him a great deal of attention from audiences and filmmakers alike. In 1969, Redford got a role in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which would make him a bona fide star. Redford's sly performance definitely added to the overall excellence of the film, which became the top-grossing hit of the year and won four Academy Awards. That same year, Redford earned praise for Downhill Racer and Tell Them Willie Boy is Here. In 1973, Redford hit it big, starring in two blockbusters, The Way We Were and The Sting.

Robert RedfordThe Sting received ten Academy Award nominations. Throughout the rest of the seventies, Redford had continued success in roles in The Great Gatsby, Three Days of the Condor, The Great Waldo Pepper, All the President's Men and The Electric Horsemen. In 1980, Redford won his first Academy Award as a director, for the family drama Ordinary People. He appeared in only ten films over the next two decades. His best efforts were reserved for behind the camera, where he made a name for himself as one of Hollywood's most respected filmmakers.

Some of Redford's directorial features were, A River Runs Through It and The Milagro Beanfield War. In 1994, Redford earned a second Oscar nomination for Best Director for the drama Quiz Show. In 1999, he adapted another bestselling novel, directing and starring in a film version of Nicholas Sparks' adult romance The Horse Whisperer. In 2000, Redford directed The Legend of Bagger Vance, starring Matt Damon and Will Smith. In my opinion , Robert Redford is one of the most talented director/actor in Hollywood today. With his wife Lola, they raised three children in the families homes in New York City and Utah. Also they have four grandchildren. There marriage ended in 1985 and since Redford has been linked to Kathy O'Rear, a costume designer and Sibylle Szaggars, a painter.

For his work with Sundance and other contributions to film, Redford was presented with an honorary Academy Award in 2002.
